The Order of the Brothers Hospitallers operates a wide variety\nof medical facilities with state-of-the-art technology.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Order of the Brothers Hospitallers, known as Barmherzige\nBr\u00fcder in German, operates around 400 health and social\ncare facilities on all continents. In the spirit of hospitality, 981\nfriars, about 64,000 full-time and 29,000 volunteers care for the sick\nand elderly, people with disabilities, people at the end of their life,\npeople battling with drug addiction, homeless people and children\nwho need help. The Brothers Hospitallers Austria (with locations\nalso in Slovakia, the Czech Republic and Hungary) work with almost\n9,400 employees in the spirit of the order\u2019s founder John of God\n(1495-1550). Without regard to a person\u2019s origin, nationality, religion,\ngender or social status, the Brothers Hospitallers want to be\nthere for all those in need of help and support people. Director\nAdolf Inzinger tells us more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Brothers Hospitallers have existed as a Catholic order for\nmore than 450 years. What does this historical heritage mean to\nyou and how does it affect your daily work?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Adolf Inzinger:<\/strong> Soon after the death of our order\u2019s founder, the first\nfriars took Christian hospitality to all continents \u2013 starting from\nIberian Europe and, through the seafarers of Spain and Portugal,\nvery soon also to South America. In 1605, the order\u2019s first hospital\nnorth of the Alps was founded in Valtice in what is now the Czech\nRepublic, and a dense network of branches soon developed in Central\nand Northern Europe, which in its heyday stretched from the\nBaltic to Northern Italy and from Westphalia to the Banat. The\nservices offered were always adapted to medical and nursing progress,\nso that today the order is one of the most progressive in\nEurope. Based on all the good things of the past we can lead the\ninstitutions into a good future today<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How would you characterise the Brothers Hospitallers?<\/em>
Inzinger:<\/strong> I think the following two formulations hit the mark \u2013 courageously\nand innovatively helping where we are needed, further\ndeveloping our tradition and actively carrying it into the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How do you deal with the shortage of skilled workers in the\nhealth sector?<\/em>
Inzinger: <\/strong>Attracting more people to nursing is one of the most\nimportant goals of Austrian health policy. The Brothers Hospitallers\nhave been involved in training for centuries. Currently, the facilities\nin Kainbach and Kritzendorf are offering lateral entrants the opportunity\nto train as nursing assistants while working. Our hospital in\nLinz has also started a similar model in cooperation with the BFI\ninstitute. The Hospital of Brothers Hospitallers Eisenstadt, in turn,\nhas been promoting midwife training for many years. The Elisabethinen\nHospital in Klagenfurt and the Br\u00fcderkrankenhaus Vienna\ncooperate with regional universities of applied sciences and enable students to gain experience in training stations lasting several\nweeks. The Austrian Province of the Order has been cooperating\nwith the Indian Province in training nurses for almost 40 years.\nWhile in the first decades members of the order came to Austria for\ntraining, in the future academically trained nurses from India will\ncome to work in our hospitals and care facilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Digitisation and artificial intelligence have long since found their way into modern medicine; data security is extremely important.

What is your experience as an employer with the influx of foreign\nworkers?<\/em>
Inzinger: <\/strong>One of the biggest hurdles to being able to work in Austria,\napart from learning the German language, is the procedure for\nthe recognition of foreign qualifications, the so-called nostrification,\nthe residence and employment permit and, for members of the\nhealth and nursing professions as well as the higher medical-technical\nservices, the registration in the health professionals registry.\nWe are in a very competitive environment in an important segment\nof the labour market for health professions. It would be important\nthat the procedures for obtaining a work permit in Austria, which\nare certainly necessary, are streamlined and simplified in the sense\nof a one-stop shop<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Is it difficult to work in a multicultural environment?<\/em>
Inzinger: <\/strong>As already mentioned, mastering the German language\nis indispensable, and yes, there are clearly also differences in culture\nand mentality. But what unites us is again the example of our\norder\u2019s founder. He lived in a time when the Moors were expelled\nfrom the Iberian Peninsula and during pogroms against Jews. And\nwhat did he do? Under the archway of the house of a friendly Moorish\nfamily, today one would say in the driveway of the house, he\nbegan to care for people in need. For him, the person seeking help\nwas in the foreground, not his origin, social status or religion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From your point of view, how has the health system changed\nover the past decades? What are the big trends?<\/em>
Inzinger: <\/strong>I would like to highlight the areas of cooperation, interdisciplinarity\nand digitisation. The past two decades have been characterised\nby new types of cooperation in the health system like\nnever before. The construction of the Vienna Donaustadt Dialysis\nCentre as a cooperation project of the Vienna Convent of the Brothers\nHospitallers with the Austrian Health Insurance Fund and the\nVienna Health Association, for example. Or the cooperation in the Elisabeth Hospice in Linz and Ried im Innkreis,\nwhich also spans several institutions; the founding\nof a laboratory network in Graz, the cooperation\nwith the Elisabethinen Hospital in Klagenfurt\nor the opening of external, dislocated outpatient\nclinics such as in Zeltweg or in Dunajsk\u00e1\nLu\u017en\u00e1 and Pezinok in Slovakia are projects of\nunprecedented quality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How does digitisation change the everyday\nlife of a health facility?<\/em>
Inzinger:<\/strong> The Covid pandemic is considered a\ndriver of digitisation. Online trade is booming, online meetings are\nreducing business trips, and administrative procedures are increasingly\nbeing carried out digitally and from home. In the Austrian facilities\nof the Brothers Hospitallers, however, digitisation already\ntook hold more than 20 years ago. The initial spark was the introduction\nof digital nursing documentation in 2002. New software\nmodules have been introduced continuously. And since 2017, we\nhave completely paperless, multimedia and digital patient documentation.
What was only a vision in the beginning is now reality and unthinkable\nwithout it. Completely paperless, multimedia digital patient\ndocumentation exists in all hospitals, retirement homes and\ncare facilities of the Brothers Hospitallers Austria. Patient histories,\nincluding fever charts, nursing documentation, medication data, images and findings from medical equipment,\nfindings brought in by patients and much more,\nare available in a single interface for medical,\ncare and therapeutic services. With this interdisciplinary\nproject, which is probably unique in its\nentirety, the Brothers Hospitallers are setting a\nmilestone for optimal patient care in the German-\nspeaking world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Does artificial intelligence also play a role in\nhealthcare?<\/em>
Inzinger: <\/strong>At present, it is increasingly coming to\nthe fore. This is mainly due to the fact that a lot of data accumulates\nin the healthcare sector that is difficult to evaluate using conventional\nmeans. At our Linz hospital, for example, we are the first in\nAustria to have a computer tomograph whose software analyses\nthe data using artificial intelligence after examining the brain and\ncan thus detect strokes. The evaluation of health data by means of\nAI can certainly help the health system in the future to recognise\ncertain events earlier and to react to them, or to gain new insights\nrelevant to health policy from the wealth of Austria-wide data.\nHowever, it is very important to me to emphasise that all data may\nonly be used in strict compliance with data protection and that in\nthe patient-oriented area AI-based findings or recommendations\nmust be validated again by a person authorised and qualified to do\nso.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How did you manage to implement this project smoothly in\nthe facilities?<\/em>
Inzinger: <\/strong>The high level of acceptance of digital documentation\nfrom the very beginning is primarily based on the involvement of\nstaff in the continuous further development of the individual software\nproducts in order to create solutions from practice for practice<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What role does sustainability play in hospitals that consume a\nlot of energy and water?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Inzinger:<\/strong> Environmental protection and sustainability are fundamental\nconcerns of the Brothers Hospitallers. For example, a text\nof the Order from the year 2000 already states that we must \u2018develop\nstrategies that promote a responsible approach to the environment\nthat belongs to all of us and is entrusted to us only for stewardship\u2019.\nThe environmental management of the Brothers Hospitallers\ntherefore extends to all areas of the facilities and ranges from the purchase of regional food to the collection of\nwaste materials and photovoltaic systems. Climate\nprotection is therefore possible almost\neverywhere, even in an operating theatre, where\nwe have recently started recycling anaesthetic\ngases. In addition to our staff, a central purchasing\ndepartment is a key position in environmental\nprotection. A procurement catalogue for the\nsustainable purchase of medical and nursing\nconsumables was developed with the central purchasing department\nand introduced at all sites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What fascinates you personally about the Order of Brothers Hospitallers?<\/em>
Inzinger:<\/strong> That the facilities of the Brothers Hospitallers are places\nof hope. Christian hospitality is the basic mission of the Brothers\nHospitallers. This has always included that the Brothers, in addition\nto caring for and treating sick people, also help those who are on the\nfringes of society or for whose suffering and need no one else feels\nresponsible. Brothers and staff live and work according to this principle\nin many places around the world. I am thinking, for example of the friars in Madang (Papua New Guinea), who\nare involved in special programmes in the social\nsector, or the \u2018Hostel of St. John of God\u2019 centre in\nQuito (Ecuador), which cares for the homeless\nand mentally ill adults without relatives. For\nmore than a year, the Brothers in Drohobycz in\nUkraine have been caring for the people around\ntheir monastery and looking after internally displaced\npersons. This list could be extended to\nmany more places, such as Batibo (Cameroon), Tanguieta (Burkina\nFaso) or Nampula (Mozambique), where civil war is raging and jihadist\ngroups are active.
The friars and staff deliberately stay in these places and try to\nmaintain health care or social care for the local population. They\nchoose to stay by the side of the population and risk their own\nhealth or even their lives for other people \u2013 such as during the last\noutbreak of Ebola in West Africa. For me, it is always moving to\nexperience how employees in Austria show solidarity for these\nreligious institutions. Fundraising, information events or flea markets\nare organised to help sick and needy people in other parts of\nthe world.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
