At the top of her agenda is the \u201cStyria Economic Strategy\n2030\u201d \u2013 one of the cornerstones for Styria\u2019s economic future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It says on your website: \u201cHardly any other technology and business\nlocation in Europe is home to so many globally successful companies\nas Styria\u201d. Why is Styria so attractive as a business location?<\/em>
Barbara Eibinger-Miedl:<\/strong> The decisive factor of success is the cooperation\nbetween science and business. Styria is the number one\nresearch region in Austria; measured in terms of gross regional\nproduct, no other province sees as many investments into research\nand development as Styria. Our universities and research institutions\nwork closely with local companies in a wide range of fields.\nMy department also supports this cooperation in a targeted manner\nbecause it results in innovative products and services with which\nthe Styrian economy is globally successful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You have been a Provincial Councillor since April 2017. Since\nthen, the Covid pandemic has been followed by the war in Ukraine,\nthe energy crisis, and now the shortage of skilled workers and the\nincreasingly noticeable climate crisis. Would you have wished for\ncalmer years for your administration? <\/em>
Eibinger-Miedl: <\/strong>When you take on a government position, it is\nobvious that there are challenges involved. But when I took office\nas a Provincial Councillor, I could not have imagined being confronted\nwith such drastic developments as a pandemic and a new war\nin Europe. Such events require quick action, but also medium- to\nlong-term changes such as the energy transition or the labour\nshortage need sustainable solutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How did you cope with these challenges, for which there were\nno contingency plans in the drawer? Are improvisation and troubleshooting\nyour strengths or rather a necessary evil? <\/em>
Eibinger-Miedl: <\/strong>In my opinion, a high degree of flexibility and stress\nresistance is required of politicians anyway. In the past two years,\nhowever, I have certainly faced more challenges and had to show\na lot of resilience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Please present briefly the most important key points of the \u2018Styrian\nEconomic Strategy 2030 - New Growth - New Opportunities\n- New Quality\u2019. <\/em>
Eibinger-Miedl:<\/strong> The strategy provides the framework for the funding\nand financing programmes with which we support Styrian\nbusinesses. Our goal in the years to come is to promote sustainable economic development. We understand sustainability in a very\ncomprehensive sense. Climate-friendly management plays just as\nimportant a role as entrepreneurial innovations with particularly\ngreat potential for the future. We will continue to focus on the\nstrengths of the Styrian economy \u2013 mobility, green technologies,\nhuman technology, microelectronics, exports, research and development,\nand cooperation between science and business. In addition,\nwe are working on measures to fight the existing labour\nshortage, on better framework conditions for start-ups and also on\nour international positioning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What contribution do EU funding programmes make to Styria\u2019s\nsuccess?<\/em>
Eibinger-Miedl: <\/strong>A very important one, which is unfortunately often\nforgotten. The European Union has brought many economic advantages\nto Austria and Styria. The EU funding programmes have made\nit possible to implement important infrastructure projects, significantly\nincrease our exports and create thousands of additional jobs.\nSince Austria\u2019s accession to the EU, Styria has been able to draw\nmore than one billion euros in funding from the most important funding\npot for the economy, the European Regional Development Fund,\nwhich, through additional co-financing from the federal and provincial\ngovernments, has triggered many times more investments in\nStyrian businesses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Broadband Initiative of Styria aims to guarantee high data\ntransmission rates throughout the province by 2030. How will you\nmanage this, and can this be done in an economically cost-effective\nway? Will the entire area of the province, including sparsely\npopulated areas, be covered? <\/em>
Eibinger-Miedl: <\/strong>In my view, the provision of high-performance internet\nis the provision of public services of the 21st century. Since\nthe Covid pandemic, this no longer applies only to companies, but\nalso to private households. In this respect, it is one of our most\nimportant tasks to equip Styria as comprehensively as possible with\nthe necessary infrastructure. Wherever possible, we rely on fibre\noptics. With the founding of the Styrian broadband and digital infrastructure\ncompany Sbidi, we have taken a big step forward years. Broadband expansion remains at the top of our agenda,\nas we still need to catch up in some rural regions. I am confident\nthat the next federal tenders will provide a further boost here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You support businesses with your procedural services. What\nservices are particularly in demand? <\/em>
Eibinger-Miedl: <\/strong>The service is aimed at companies that want to\nimplement large-scale projects. In the Department for Economic\nAffairs, a procedure coordinator acts as the central contact for investors.\nIn most cases, information is required on the necessary\npermits for the settlement or expansion of businesses. In addition,\nthe investor\u2019s networking with all responsible offices in Styria and\nsupport in the preparation of applications are the most frequently\nrequested services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Styria has some large ski resorts. How do you deal with the\nproblem that there is often no snow due to climate change? Is\nartificial snow the way out? <\/em>
Eibinger-Miedl: <\/strong>Styria is traditionally a winter sports region. Therefore,\nskiing, but also numerous other activities such as cross-country\nskiing, tobogganing and snowshoeing, are among the pillars of\nStyrian winter tourism. Unfortunately, climatic developments require\nartificial snow, which is why we have invested heavily in this\narea in recent years. In order to be attractive for guests all year\nround, many Styrian ski resorts have also expanded their offer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Which qualities of Styria as a holiday destination should be developed\nin the years to come? <\/em>
Eibinger-Miedl: <\/strong>Styria has been highly appreciated as a holiday\ndestination by guests from Austria and abroad for many years, as\nshown by the positive development in the number of guests and\novernight stays. Key factors of success are the wonderful countryside,\nthe diverse range of offers, Styrian culinary delights and the\nwarmth of our tourism professionals. We will continue to build on\nthese strengths, and we will focus in future even more intensively\non our positive image as the \u201cGreen Heart of Austria\u201d abroad. In\naddition, we will anchor the topic of sustainability even more\nstrongly in Styrian tourism and have therefore been the first province\nin Austria to develop its own sustainability strategy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What are your plans to overcome the shortage of skilled workers? <\/em>
Eibinger-Miedl: <\/strong>The Styrian labour market has developed dynamically\nin recent years. In many areas we no longer only have a\nshortage of skilled workers, but already a shortage of labour. On\nthe one hand, this is due to the demographic development, which\nis now clearly noticeable, but on the other hand, it is also due to the\nchange in the world of work, such as the trend towards part-time\nwork. Together with the Department for Labour and non-governmental\nstakeholders, we have developed a labour market strategy\nfor our province. It has two cornerstones: On the one hand, we want\nto further increase the potential of the people living in Styria, for\nexample through training and further education, and on the other\nhand, we want to strengthen the acquisition of international skilled\nworkers accordingly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Where do you see the greatest challenges in the years to come?\nWhich other goals are at the top of your agenda? <\/em>
Eibinger-Miedl: <\/strong>We are living in times of profound change, when I\nthink of the digital and the green transformation, for example. It is\nimportant to me to support domestic companies in successfully\novercoming these changes and in taking advantage of the associated\nopportunities. Another major personal concern of mine is\nstrengthening local and urban centres in Styria. For some months\nnow, a provincial coordinator for town centres has been supporting\nmunicipalities, with the involvement of the population, in implementing\nprojects to revitalise their town and city centres.
